While she was already an accomplished actress, I've certainly enjoyed Charlize Theron's shift into action films starting with her portrayal of Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road into a baddie role in this weekends' The Fate of the Furious and as the lead in this hard-edge Cold War action thriller. The first trailer passed me by somehow, but this second one look awesome. Let's break it down.
The Gist
Theron plays MI6's best Cold War operative Lorraine Broughton, a lethal lady with a laundry list of kills to her name. For her latest mission, Broughton will head to Berlin to track down a traitor and take vengeance on those that have wronged her and the Free World.
Excellent Action
While you could argue they give away too many of the film's action beats, that remains to be seen, I really like what I've seen so far. An emphasis on insane hand to hand combat with a Bourne like focus on using every available weapon at your disposal shot in an easy to follow fashion. I'm already interested. It also looks like we're angling for an R-rating so no one needs to hold back.
A Gonzo Cold War Movie
I don't know why someone besides James Bond hasn't done this before. Cold War spy movies tend to be stuffy and subtle affairs but this movie looks like it's going for high energy cheekiness. Lots of sex appeal, lots of violence, and a predominantly humorous tone. I'm definitely a fan.
High Camp Theron and Company
Theron always gives committed performances but this is a fantastic new level. One moment she looks deliciously unhinged in action scenes and love scenes, the next she looks cool and unaffected. It vaguely reminded me of Keanu Reeves approach in John Wick, and that's a good thing. Also the rest of this cast is stacked with John Goodman, Toby Jones, and James McAvoy rounding things out.
