I think it's fair to say that Marvel's Thor movies have been generally enjoyable, but not the studios strongest. The first film was an amusing intro with great fish out of water jokes and epic fun, and the second was a little muddled but still fun and funny enough to warrant a watch. However, my personal interest in Thor's third film grew with every detail including Taika Waitit in the director's chair and a Planet Hulk storyline. So let's take a look at this awesome new trailer with eighties neon and a perfect song choice and see what's in store!
General Plot Outline
So it looks like the end of Asgard is either happening or impending and Thor is on the ropes. His hammer has been destroyed and he's been captured to be a gladiator on a far away planet. My guess is is winning in a gladiator match or teaming up with The Hulk hold the key to his eventual return to Asgard and that he'll grab some new allies along the way. So here's what stands out.
Cate Blanchett is Awesome
Cate Blanchett's villainous Hela has been downplayed in favor of the Planet Hulk storyline but she looks awesome. It looks like she's a great fighter and is powerful enough to destroy Mjolnir. Not sure how the pillars of fire come about but she at least looks interesting and formidable.
Emphasis on the Comedy
I'm glad that Marvel has finally realized that 1) Thor is easily the silliest character they have and 2) his movies should be suitably funny. Considering director Taika Waitit's honed comedy chops this has the potentially to be as funny if not funnier than the Iron Man movies as indicated by the constant jokes at Thor killing all the dramatic tension after Hulk's arrival by cheering.
What's Everyone Else Doing?
There are glimpses of some of our favorite characters and new friends, but the biggest questions I have are Asgard related. Where is Odin? Is Loki openly ruling Asgard now or does the invasion show him for what he is? How is Heimdal gonna help? Lots of questions with potentially fun answers.
