Well 2017 is shaping up to be an great year for Stephen King. First IT gets the remake treatment, and now, after years of development hell King's Dark Tower series comes to life with a full Hollywood adaptation with all of the bells and whistles. Here's our first look.
The Two Leads Look Perfect
Idris Elba has been teetering towards full blown action hero status for years, and this looks like his breakthrough. His Gunslinger looks gruff, bad-ass, and tortured in the best way possible. Also huzzah for an actor of color getting top billing in a movie like this. Oh and Matthew McConaughey as evil incarnate feels perfect for the political climate (a world-weary black man against an evil white men bent on world destruction) and lets him spread his villainous wings.
Gigantic Production Values
Considering the hodgepodge of genres in this film (horror, western, and sci-fi to name a few), you'd be forgiven for expecting a Deadpool-esque test run budget. While this might mean fewer name actors in the movie, they certainly weren't skipping on effects because we've got action beats, a ton of expensive and great looking CGI, and big sets. If you're gonna develop something like The Dark Tower you gotta give it the funding to thrive and it looks like they did.
The Action Looks Bad-Ass
I was already in for this movie with Idris Elba as an Old West styled gunfighter, but seeing how that manifests, including some impossible reload times and all of the John Woo bullet ballet you could ask for, I'm far more excited than I expected to be.
Rating?
Based on the trailer, I'm guessing this will be a PG-13 affair, as most big budget films are, but since it is Stephen King I'm wondering if we're going to get something more adult oriented. We'll see....
