There's plenty of comedies you can sell with the pitch alone, and Warner Bros. film The House is a perfect example. Hey! You know how it's super hard to pay for college nowadays? What if someone's parents went to extremes to pay for their kids' college? Yeah, that's totally a thing nowadays....how are they gonna make the money? These two suburbanites are going to start an underground casino! That's not bad who do you have in mind? Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler. Oh and put in that crazy guy from The League. And I'm sold, and the latest Red Band (Adults Only) Trailer only confirmed my desire to see this movie. Here's some other highlights
The R-Rating
Considering the cast and premise, this is a movie that would be handcuffed by an PG-13 rating. And it's clearly not going to be. That means the casino can be as sleazy as possible and we get to watch the joy of Will Ferrell cursing like a sailor (it's just the right amount of awkward for him). This also means that anything this cast made up in riff sessions, and considering the talent involved it's also impossible they didn't, has a chance of making it up on screen.
The Take on Parents
I really love the idea that Ferrell and Poehler have essentially lucked into their life and as such has no assets to go towards a college loan. Not only is this a nice takedown of the idea that your parents always know what they're doing, but I think perfectly taps into the helplessness or ignorance that plenty of adults feel but don't vocalize.
For Me: Jason Mantzoukas
As fans of The League (he played Raffi) and the How Did This Get Made?! podcast already know, Jason Mantzoukas is a hilarious wild man of a comic actor and this is easily his biggest role to date. Not only am I thrilled to see him getting a bigger part, which can perhaps have more layers than a one note character, but he's also a seasoned improviser working with other seasoned improvisers. I cannot wait.
