Considering the level of excitement and enthusiasm for Wonder Woman it only seems appropriate that the first superhero blockbuster featuring a black hero is promoted the same week. Granted fans of the character were already excited due to his appearance in Captain America: Civil War and the cast and crew is stacked with talented people, but does the first glimpse deliver? We find out in today's trailer talk.
The Skinny
From the looks of it, T'Challa is headed back to Wakanda after assuming the Black Panther role in Civil War. However, his return may not be so peaceful as a rival from within his country and foe determined to exploit the nation's resources team up with sinister intent.
What Stands Out
The Concepts/Design
I love the Wakanda set and costume design which is an interesting mix of steam-punk and traditional African clothing. Everything from the weapons used in hand to hand combat seems to have been chosen in reference to something else. It's also cool that the this technological marvel of a society hides itself from outsiders by preying on stereotypes. Also holy hell is it awesome to see a sea of non-white faces in a Marvel movie.
Michael B. Jordan = Villain!!
With Ryan Coogler directing, Michael B. Jordan's involvement was almost a given. However, until now I wasn't sure what his role would be since Chadwick Boseman already helms the Panther mantle. And from the looks of it he's villainous with some great hand to hand combat skills with some awesome hair. We already knew Andy Serkis' Ulysses Klaue was going to show up due to Age of Ultron but the team-up is a fun development.
The Female Security Force
The king's personal bodyguard's the Dora Milaje look awesome. They've got great actresses in the roles, Lupita Nyong'o and The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira, their outfits are boss, and the look when they show up, as in "take a hike we've got this" is everything.
Emphasis on Hand to Hand Combat
Minus some more Panther-related car insanity, the action we see is primarily focused on hand to hand combat with weapons. While I'm unsure if this is the film's true focus, since the effects are clearly being completed in post, I like the notion that all of our heroes are highly skilled fighters.
Verdict: Got A Taste and I Want More
So far the big elements, i.e. the setup, the players, and the look are all amazing but I want to see more of the Panther himself. That said, I'm seeing this opening day.
